Kids on the Block
The MHS Dramatic Society provides an important program to the Merrillville Community School Corporation by running a “The Kids on the Block” puppet troupe which provides educational programs for school children on such topics as substance abuse, self-esteem, gangs and violence, and avoiding peer pressure. These are the programs that the Dramatic Society’s KOB troupe brings to all five elementary schools in the Merrillville Community School Corporation.
This year
our student coordinator is senior Niki Kraska. She will be responsible for
training the high school “peer puppeteers” who will present the skits for the
elementary school students. Training consists of a brief “how to” video,
practice with puppeteering skills, and skit memorization. Rehearsals usually
take place during the four fourth hour lunch/study periods. On performance days, puppeteers complete a field trip slip and are excused from their regular
academic classes to participate in the program.
You will find this project to be a very rewarding experience. You will be
helping to educate our students about important social issues and you will be
gaining many new skills. If you think you might be interested in participating
as a KOB puppeteer, contact Mrs. Seaver or Niki Kraska in the Small Theatre (FAC
111).
